EIGHT new houses are to be built on the site of an existing house in Ely's Witchford Road.

Freshwater Estates was given the go-ahead for the scheme which will involve demolishing the present house and building four detached houses and four semi-detached homes with parking and garages.

Nine letters of objection were received from nearby residents concerned that too many houses would be built on the site, leading to existing properties being over-looked. They were also worries about the effect on wildlife.

East Cambridgeshire District Council planning officer Angela Briggs told planning committee members in a report: "The dwellings have been designed to as not to dominate their surroundings and one and a half storeys have been chosen as the optimum height in this location, so the maximum amount of accommodation can be provided on a small footprint, resulting in the proposed buildings not having an overbearing impact on their neighbours.
