HOLLY Emms, a Year 10 pupil at the King's School Ely, has won first prize in a nationwide competition sponsored by the British Mycological Society.
Youngsters studying for GCSE biology were challenged to choose a drug produced from fungi and design a poster to explain its origins and uses.
Her poster featured statins, the drug which helps to reduce the level of cholesterol. One of the most commonly used statins is produced from aspergillus terreus, a soil-borne fungus. The poster also explained how statins work, who should use the drug and its possible side effects.
Holly won £30 and £250 for the school's biology department.
