THE heaviest snowfall for almost 20 years has made for treacherous conditions on the roads across Cambridgeshire.

Heavy snow overnight has fallen across large parts of the region causing disruption to roads and forcing dozens of schools to close.

The South-east of England has suffered the worst snow for 18 years bringing chaos to the rail network and Stanstead Airport. BAA has warned anyone planning to fly to expect delays.

The Met Office has issued an extreme weather warning for England, Wales and parts of eastern Scotland and more snow is forecast today and tomorrow.

They have issued a moderate risk of severe weather for the East of England and say the strong easterly winds will bring drifting to higher ground and make the temperature feel a lot colder.

Cambridgeshire police have warned drivers not to make unnecessary journeys and allow plenty of time to reach their destinations.

A police spokeswoman asked drivers to take extra water and a blanket with them on their journeys, as a precaution.

The Met Office warned that up to 20 cm of snowfall would fall in the next 24 hours and many areas, not on council gritting routes may become too dangerous to drive on.

Dozens of schools across the county have sent pupils home because of the adverse conditions, with three schools in the East Cambridgeshire area, Burwell Village College, Ely St Mary's and Soham Village College, all announcing closure this morning.

Cambridge County Council also issued advice to motorists: "You need time to react safely to icy roads. Cut your speed, don't brake suddenly, drop down a gear to let your engine help with the braking and, above all, anticipate possible problems ahead."

A number of accidents have been reported on major roads and the tube and rail, and bus networks have almost ground to a halt in some areas.

First Capital Connect say trains into London, from Peterborough, King's Lynn and Cambridge have been disrupted.
