The head of geography at King's Ely Junior is one of 60 people selected for a new project to help make Britain a more outdoorsy and adventurous nation.

Teacher and author Alan Parkinson was named an Ordnance Survey GetOutside champion at an event in the New Forest. He was joined by TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle and endurance adventurer Sean Conway.

The champions include journalists, bloggers and authors who write about their adventures in Britain.

Alan, who will be encouraging colleagues and students to learn outside, said: “I won’t be climbing Everest (not yet anyway), but will be encouraging young people to take those first steps into exploring their local area, as well as more unfamiliar places.

“I enjoy walking and landscape photography, and reading about the landscapes through which I travel.

“My daily commute between Norfolk and Cambridgeshire allows me to observe the changing seasons and weather conditions.

Alan has previously worked for the Geographical Association and the Open University. He has written resources for the BBC, Google, Polar and authored or co-authored eight children’s books.
