A man from Haverhill has been charged in connection with a serious collision that caused a local footballer to lose his legs and left another with serious injuries.
Jan Adamec, 40, of Shetland Road, in Haverhill, Suffolk, has been charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
27-year-old Shaun Whiter and Joey Abbs, 30, were left with serious injuries after Adamec’s Ford Focus crashed into them at the side of Dullingham Road, Newmarket, on July 1.
Mr Whiter was helping Mr Abbs change a tyre on his Vauxhall Astra at 10.55pm when they were hit by the Ford Focus. Shaun was pinned to the back of his BMW, while Joey was trapped between the two cars.
The two men were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, but Mr Whiter’s injuries were so severe that both legs were amputated below the knee.
Since the incident, the two men have been inundated with support, and over £60,000 has been raised via JustGiving to help them on their road to recovery.

Mr Adamec remains in custody and is due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court this morning.
