THE official six-week public consultation period on the Ely Masterplan was launched on April 18 and local people can now have their say on the future of Ely.
Residents can give their official view on what they think of the vision and whether they support the areas proposed for development.
A questionnaire will be published in the Ely Standard next week, in our paper and on the website. All questionnaires can be sent to the district council and will be considered as part of the consultation.
The Masterplan, is the culmination of six months' work and consultation, and brings together for the first time the developments that can ensure the city fulfils its potential. From proposals showing how the city will grow towards 28,000 over the next 20 years, to creating a new southern road link, and improved leisure facilities, the vision looks at how to improve the city.
Exhibitions will take place in libraries, and council representatives will man two market stalls in Ely market place during the six-week period. The questionnaire is also available on the council's website from tomorrow.
Cllr Peter Moakes, chairman of strategic development at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "The Ely Masterplan is about making the city a better place to live and work in, but it can only succeed if we work together to create it. This means making sure it is owned by us all, not one or two organisations. This is why an open, honest and full consultation period is vital.
"In the vision for the future, the document talks about building new office space, homes and creating new leisure activities. It also highlights areas where this development should take place, what we are keen to find out is whether the public agree with the plan. We want to hear from as many people as possible who can give us their views about whether the Masterplan is looking to develop the right things.
"The key to the success of this vision is to move forward in partnership with residents, businesses and other organisations. Alone, the Masterplan will be difficult to bring to reality, but with the comments and support of 18,000 people we have a once in a lifetime chance to build something that we can be proud of. Please do not waste this chance, we want and need your feedback to move forward and I look forward to hearing what Ely thinks." Questionnaires, letters and reports from members of the public will all be considered as part of the consultation process.
