A paedophile who used to work in Haddenham committed crimes that were “depraved and horrifying” and will have a devastating life-long impact on his victims, warned a national charity.

Richard Maycroft was last week jailed for 13 years for nine sexual assaults on four female victims - two of which were 12 years old.

Following the court case the NSPCC contacted our newspaper to urge everybody to be on their guard to protect children against sexual abuse.

A spokesman said: “Richard Maycroft’s crimes were depraved and horrifying.

“He exploited the children and forced them to endure the most horrendous forms of abuse.

“The scale of the abuse, which lasted over two decades, is truly appalling and we know how devastating and long lasting the impact will be.

“Child protection is everyone’s responsibility.

“We must all be alert to signs of a child’s distress and responsible enough to act on our concerns without hesitation.”

The 42 year old father of two, of Huntingdon Road, Chatteris, who used to work at Anson packaging, showed no remorse during the court hearing as he insisted he was innocent of all the charges.

Judge Sean Enright, said during the sentencing hearing at Peterborough Crown Court that Maycroft had a particular interest in young girls that he was “barely able to control.”

He added: “What’s remarkable about this offending is the duration over which the offences are spread and the abuse of trust that is significant in nearly all of these counts and the vulnerability of the complainants.

“They were not in a position to resist in anyway. The breach of trust was very grave.”

Maycroft was found guilty of two charges of indecent assault on a child, two charges of assaulting a child by touching, one charge of rape on a woman in her 20s, three charges of sexual assault on a woman in her 20s and one on a woman in her 50s.
