GREY’S of Ely hope that if they are allowed to build a manager’s house on site they can stamp out the growing menace of thefts and vandalism.
The Witchford based company has told East Cambs planners that in the past two years there have reported 25 such incidents to police.
They hope a new depot manager’s house can be built as part of an expansion that will include a training centre and improved staff facilities.
Currently, trainee coach drivers have to travel to specialist centres in either Manchester or London for professional training but Grey’s hope to change that by building their own centre.

They say it will provide “an innovative and visually attractive structure embodying Grey’s commitment to innovation, training and investment.
“The development will also provide an outside alfresco area for employees to relax and unwind.
“The area will also include trim trail and fitness equipment that can be used by employees and those using the training/meeting/office space.”
The company was founded in 1946 by Charles Grey and was originally based in the city before moving to its purpose built depot in Common Road, Witchford, in 1996. The business employs about 40 people, with the proposed development creating jobs for a further five people.
A decision on the plans is expected in the next eight weeks.
