A GROUP of youngsters embarking on the Government-backed Young Citizenship Scheme were busy in Haddenham on Friday adding the finishing touches to the village’s new skate park.

The 13-strong group were handed cans of spray paint and were let loose on the skate park, spraying their designs under the watchful guidance of the scheme’s volunteers.

As part of their month-long citizenship scheme, the group also spent time at Ely Fire Station to find out more about the fire service and learn about road safety before using their new knowledge and skills to host a road safety event in Ely’s Market Square.

The youngsters also spent the week building relationships in their communities and were one of the first batch to take part in the National Citizenship Scheme, a scheme which is directly advocated by the Government.

The young people take part in the scheme for three weeks and spend a week doing challenging outdoor activities, a residential week in which they live together while working on projects and then a third and final week coming up with their own ideas for a challenge which will make a difference to their local community.
