A GOLF club in Ely left devastated by an arson attack is ready to open its doors once more, after six months of hard graft.

The On Par Driving Range on Downham Road was destroyed by a blaze back in March, with thousands of pounds of damage caused to the driving range and club house.

Owner Graham Mawe was on holiday at the time the blaze broke out and was forced to rush back from abroad to find the club, based at the Ely Outdoor Sports Association site, in tatters.

Now, some six months on, the club is ready to open once more, with a bigger and better driving range and club house.

Speaking to the Ely Standard, Mr Mawe said: “It has been an absolute nightmare, this has been the biggest challenge, harder than anything I have done before but the support from members has been fantastic.

“We have had a total rebuild, we have more space now and better facilities and in the long run it will all be worthwhile.”

The club will officially open again on the weekend of October 8-9 but Mr Mawe said the range and course is ready to use now.
