Ely’s very own marathon man completed his 10th and final London Marathon yesterday.
Alex Watson, 77, laced up his running shoes for the world’s most iconic marathon for the final time yesterday morning and crossed the finishing line in an impressive time of six hours and 11 minutes.
He took on his last 26.2-mile charity effort in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, which helped him overcome the disease, and, with the help of donations from friends and family members, has raised over £2,000.
Alex was joined in the capital by his family and wife Lynn, who admits that she was relieved to watch him cross the line for the final time.
“I’m glad it’s all over!” she said.
“He did really well to finish and it was a great day.”
However, Alex doesn’t plan on hanging up his running shoes just yet.
“He’s going to carry on his running,” Lynn said.
“But not before he catches up on all the housework he’s left behind!”
Alex was one of the oldest runners to take part in yesterday’s marathon. The oldest, 83-year-old Kenneth Jones, finished in six hours and 49 minutes.
