Generous shoppers donate thousands

Customers at Sainsbury's in Ely helped to raise thousands of pounds for a number of local charities and community groups in the lead up to Christmas.

The stores Christmas in the community fundraising drive began with a charity stall for the Lisa Barnes Memorial Fund which raised £489, followed by a performance from City of Ely Military band.

Disney Princesses Anna and Elsa from Frozen made a guest appearance in the store and excited young shoppers were able to pose for photos with the duo.

Store manager, Karen Watts said: “Our Christmas in the community fundraising drive has been so successful, and I would like to thank all of our customers who supported these events.”

She added: “We have helped to raise well over £3,000 which will make a huge difference to many different charities and community groups.

“My personal highlight had to be the visit from the Frozen Princesses, and seeing all of the children arriving to the store dressed in their Anna and Elsa costumes.”

Ely District Scouts helped with bag-packing on the weekend before Christmas and raised £2,500 which they will be using to pay for events in the New Year.

Performances from a variety of local bands and music groups added to the festive atmosphere in store, with Viva! Arts and Community group raising £270 in donations.

Branching Out, the stores local charity partner was in store over the festive period raising money to support local people with learning disabilities and face painter Jeanette from Funtasy Faces, who offered her services to customers on Christmas Eve, donated £30 from her takings to the charity.
