GAS works are expected to disrupt traffic in the centre of Ely for six weeks.
Work started on St Mary's Street on Monday.
Parking bays in the area will be temporarily closed.
The work is part of a multi-million pound project to improve the gas supply system in East Anglia.
National Grid construction engineer, David Jewson, said: "This work will mean local people can continue to benefit from a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come. We will do our utmost to minimise disruption.
