A HEAVILY laden lorry transporting tonnes of straw became wedged under Ely’s rail bridge, causing lengthy delays for bemused motorists.
The hapless driver ignored several warning signs at the bridge and ploughed his vehicle straight into the concrete, luckily avoiding serious injury to himself or passing motorists.
His load of straw stayed firmly in place on the back of his Volvo lorry, but the windscreen and roof of his cab were ruined.
The incident took place at about 11.15am on Wednesday, November 14, and motorists had to be diverted onto the level crossing while recovery crews worked to free the vehicle for more than three hours.
The underpass is approximately 9ft tall and is adorned in several luminous signs warning drivers of its low clearance.
