EIGHTY pupils at an Ely school enjoyed a 'red-letter day' trip to Wicksteed Park courtesy of two East Cambridgeshire Rotary clubs.
The pupils, from Highfield Special School, were joined by 46 carers, teachers and assistant teachers for last Wednesday’s trip to the Northamptonshire theme park.
The Rotary Club of Ely organised the day with the support of Littleport Rotary Club. Littleport contributed to the cost of the exercise and Tony Winchester helped with the arrangements.
Ely Rotarian Eric Grant said: “Among youngsters’ favourite rides were the Lady of the Lake train ride around the main lake, the racing cars, the ladybird coaster ‘caterpillar’ and the twister ride.
“The water splash was also well-liked, especially by the Rotarians who joined the trip.
“The roller coaster didn’t seem to attract so many people but the screaming from the pirate ship - a giant swing for a score or more of people at a time - indicated that tummies were churning there too.
“Lunch was provided in the form of lots to drink (soft, of course), sandwiches, crisps and chocolate bars.”
Rotary clubs across the country organised similar trips last Wednesday for children with special needs.
