PROGRESS on a new leisure centre for East Cambridgeshire continued to gather momentum this week with the announcement of a £350,000 funding injection.

The funds, granted from section 106 reserves, will be put towards the cost of architect's fees and a planning application, which, it is hoped, will be formally submitted for approval by council officers in December.

Archaeological, environment and traffic surveys at the site have now been completed and the next phase of the plans are expected to come before the Overview and Scrutiny committee in the autumn, where concept designs for the new building will be revealed for the first time.

Should the plans get council backing, work will begin on the £11 million centre, set to be built adjacent to the Ely Outdoor Sports Association (EOSA) site in Downham Road, from early 2011, with a view to being up and running in time for the Olympics in 2012.

Cllr Fred Brown, said: "If we want to deliver this project we've got to give it our full support and now is the best time to put some money on the table so we can progress it."

Initial plans for the centre were unveiled to councillors in July 2007 following a report into leisure provision in the district. Since then, work has continued at a relentless pace with a detailed list of facilities set to be included at the site already drawn-up.

The state-of-the-art centre will house a large eight-lane swimming pool, 100 station health suite, six court sports hall and a teaching pool featuring a novel sliding floor to make room for scuba diving lessons and other aquatic sports.

Cllr Phillip Reid said, "I think it is very important that the leisure centre should go ahead and I think it is right that we do everything we can to develop new jobs and stimulate industry in the area.
