Fund-raiser Jake bakes up a treat for street party

ELY fund-raiser Jake Newton raised an impressive £175 for charity with a Diamond Jubilee-themed cake stand.
To celebrate the jubilee, residents of Stour Green held a street party and 12-year-old Jake took the opportunity to bake a fantastic array of cakes and biscuits to sell to neighbours.
The event was a roaring success and the Ely College student raised much-needed funds for the Forces Children’s Trust, a cause very close to his heart.
Jake’s dad Richard has served with the Royal Engineers as a bomb disposal expert for 18 years and is due to head off for a third tour of Afghanistan next year.
The Forces Children’s Trust offers support and guidance for youngsters whose parents and relatives have been injured or killed while serving with the military and Jake decided he would like to do his part for other military families.
Jake’s mum Kirsteen said: “There is great awareness now for the families of the soldiers who serve abroad and people were very willing to contribute to a good cause.
“Jake is very keen to help out the trust and he spent three days baking in preparation for the event.”
Jake is hoping to raise even more money when he runs another stall at Open Farm Sunday later this month.
