The downloadable app comes after an incident where counterfeit money was passed in the Soham BP service station in January. The two £50 notes were particularly distinctive because the Queen’s watermark appeared to be ‘winking’ at the holder, said police.

The ‘Bank of England Banknotes’ app, which is available on Apple, Android and Windows devices, carefully explains and displays how you can recognise a genuine or counterfeit note.

Police added: “If you handle cash on a regular basis it is well worth adding to your device.

“If you have any information to pass with regard to counterfeit currency, please send us a message via Facebook, use the 101 service, or contact CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.”
