A SHOPPER who challenged a drunk in the Co-op at Chatteris was assaulted and had had his glasses knocked off during a fracas.

Christopher Flitton had complained when James Mansfield shouted and swore in front of his child.

Other shoppers were shocked to hear such language in the store, and Mr Flitton asked him to curb his language.

Mansfield spat at Mr Flitton's partner Lyanne Walker as she held her child in her arms, and then swung a punch at Mr Flitton.

Mr Flitton kicked Mansfield's legs from under him, and held him on the floor until police arrived, Fenland magistrates were told.,

Mansfield, 23, of the Southerns, Sutton, admitted assaulting Mr Flitton, damaging his glasses, and using threatening behaviour towards Ms Walker.

Mitigating, Anita Waterman said Mansfield spat on the floor, and did not think it connected with anyone.

"But he accepts that to spit on the floor in front of someone would be insulting behaviour," she added. Ms Walker slapped Mansfield, she said. The court ordered Mansfield to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £43 costs.
