INVESTIGATIONS by Cambridgeshire County Council showed that the majority of accidents along the road between Chatteris and Ramsey involved excessive speed, and are down to motorists overtaking or losing control.
One motorist was clocked at 118mph on a Wednesday afternoon on the 50mph limit road and a coroner heard this year how one driver died after he had overtaken at 80mph into the path of an oncoming car. Last month, police prosecuted a driver for speeding after he was caught travelling at over 100mph.
The scheme would see the installation of four sets of safety cameras along the relatively straight 4.5-mile stretch of road from the Doddington Road to the Forty Foot Bridge. These would measure the average speed it takes vehicles to travel between the various points along the road. They would be connected by telemetery (radio waves).
Other options were examined. A barrier system was considered but it was concluded that the nature of the river bank would make it difficult to build and that vehicles striking barriers could be bounced into the path of others.
