Sainsbury’s in Ely has welcomed the Ely Foodbank team back into the store.
The collection trolley was removed at the start of the year after the overwhelming response to its Christmas fundraising campaign, giving volunteers time to sort the food, and returned on Saturday.
Cathy Wright from Ely Foodbank, said: “Since we introduced the Foodbank into Sainsbury’s early in 2013, customers have donated an amazing 4,636kg of food which equates to 460 food parcels for people in this area who are struggling to put food on the table.
“The response of Sainsbury’s shoppers has been overwhelming and we look forward to the return to the store in February.”
Before Christmas colleagues from the store in Lisle Lane, visited the charity’s main storage area in Ely at the lighthouse centre, where they got to understand how the food supports local people and assisted with sorting the food parcels.
Ely Foodbank collected around seven tonnes of food throughout last year, with approximately four tonnes coming from Sainsbury’s customers.
