A purge to clean up the mess left by fly-tippers has uncovered what East Cambridgeshire District Council is calling their “biggest and most shocking” find to date.
The council has been pro-actively targeting fly-tipping across the district and restoring blighted areas but even they weren’t prepared for one visit.
“A collection on the A1303 (near Newmarket) was our biggest and most shocking to date. All of this waste weighed over 20 tonnes,” said a council spokesman.
“Please help us keep the district tidy and take your waste home rather than throw it out the car window.
“If you have waste which cannot go into your bin at home, please take it to your nearest recycling centre. Together we can make this district a fantastic place to live, work and visit.”
The council has also visited Naves Acre Drove and Temple Road in Isleham and removed items including a box of wood and more tyres.
“The weight for the totalled 380kg,” said the spokesman.
As well as clearing fly-tipping from around the district on Saturday, a crew from East Cambs Street Scene headed to the lay-bys on the A14 to litter pick. The team collected 400kg of litter.
The team also visited Long Causeway near Coveney and Cherrytree Lane in Soham last week, collecting 30 tyres, two white goods and a heap of general waste.

On Saturday waste crews visited Burrough Green, Red Lodge, Earith and Chippenham.
“The weather seemed to have affected the types of waste that had been dumped, with items including a paddling pool, buckets and a hose pipe,” said the spokesman.
“This was alongside the usual suspects of white goods as well as domestic waste and construction waste. The weight of waste collected from Saturday totalled over a tonne.
“It is our vision to make East Cambridgeshire a fantastic place to live, work and visit, please help us by taking your litter home or visiting your nearest recycling centre.”
