There are delays for motorists in Ely this morning (Monday) after the weekend's heavy rain left the city's railway station underpass closed.

Almost an inch of rain fell on Sunday alone, with Cambridgeshire police forced to close the Station Road underpass from about noon because of deepening flood water.

And the water was still causing problems on Monday morning, forcing cars to use the overpass and causing tailbacks on the A142 and Ely’s Back Hill and Broad Street junctions.

Cambridgesgire police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Twitter user Mark Hayes reported seeing cars driving through Cherry Hill park in a bid to beat the queues in Broad Street.

He tweeted: “Wow, not seen that before. Cars coming up Cherry Hill Park foot/cycle path trying to beat the traffic chaos in Ely this morning.”
