A KING'S School Charity Action Day fund looks set to reach five figures, thanks to a massive effort by pupils, staff, parents and friends of the school. They all helped to come up with a variety of money-spinning ideas to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity chosen to benefit from this year's fund raising efforts.

Daniel Beesley, 15, was sponsored to have his curly locks cut - just one of the stunts which attracted visitors to King's Hayward Theatre on Saturday for a fund-raising fair.

Hair stylist, Lisa Cooper from Toppers of Ely, cut Daniel's hair and he has already collected more than £1,500 in sponsorship.

At King's Junior School, pupils and staff had organised a variety of stalls, side-shows and a car valeting service which proved popular with visitors.

Fund-raising continued on Monday at King's Acremont, the Pre-Prep and Nursery section of the school, where a May Day celebration raised a massive £4,600.

The day also marked the 25th anniversary of the acquisition of Acremont House by the King's School and pupils were invited to wear silver fancy dress.

Acremont parents got out their cheque books to support an auction of donated items including a signed limited edition print by Gerald Coulson which sold for £305, two weekends in Amsterdam which made £200 each, a two-minute trolley dash round Budgen's of Soham which went for £120 and £120 which bought a carpenter for a day.

Charity Action Day co-ordinator, teacher Mrs Jayne Mackay, said: "I'm grateful to all the pupils, staff, parents and friends of the school who have really entered into the spirit of Charity Action Day. Money is still coming in and we're keeping our fingers crossed that the final total will be around £10,000."
