A flower festival is set to take place over the weekend of September 20-21 at St George’s Church – with the theme ‘Lest We Forget’.

The memorial plaque is being restored by specialists in Surrey who will also add the names of two brothers, Albert and Sidney Gage, who also lost their lives in the war but were not recorded at the time.

Whilst the plaque was being removed from the church in July the names of the two tradesmen who installed it - MJ Rayner and WH Gifford - were discovered, together with the date February 28, 1921.

It is believed that WT Rayner was a carpenter and wheelwright in Stretham at the time and local historian Mike Petty has found that Mr Gifford was employed by him to carry out the work in Little Thetford.

Tony Shaw, chairman of the fund-raising committee, said: “On Sunday, September 21, at 6pm we will be holding a rededication service for the plaque taken by the Rev John Sansom and we would very much like to invite any surviving relatives of the men to join us.

“The original dedication service was conducted by the Archdeacon of Wisbech, the Rev JH Scawley on Wednesday, March 3, 1921, and thanks again to Mike Petty, we have found a detailed report of the service in the Ely Standard for March 5 that year.”
