Firefighters from Ely and Soham were among a team which raised more than £300 for charity by kayaking across the Wash, in Norfolk.

The six-strong team of firefighters, who are stationed at Cambridge Airport, paddled their way across 14 miles of open water to raise money for the RNLI, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Among the team were Tony Garner, from Ely and Rebecca White, from Soham.

The team was accompanied by colleagues Gary Morgan and Andy Coleman, who provided support on jet skis.

Tony said; “Hunstanton Kayaks sponsored the event by providing the kayaks and training which involved the all essential safety advice and navigation training. “Hunstanton Sailing Club allowed the kayakers the use of the club for an enjoyable barbecue and a few beers for which Hunstanton Kayaks and the firefighters were truly appreciative.”

Hunstanton’s promenade was packed with well wishers when the kayak team made it ashore, with more than 100 people cheering them home.

Les Collision from Hunstanton Kayaks added: “It was a great end to a very challenging trip. The weather was very windy with a force 5-6 from the south which meant the kayakers had a head wind for most of the trip.”
