A crew and rescue vehicle from Cambridge, along with a crew from Ely, were called to a cow in a river near the Fish and Duck Marina, in Holt Fen.

Crew commander Jon Smith said: “When crews arrived they found a cow about 900m from the marina towards Stretham village. The animal appeared exhausted and distressed and may have been there some time.

“Specialist in-water and animal rescue crews from Cambridge used a boat to access the animal to secure a head restraint before they swam/walked it along the river to a walk-out area. It appeared to be uninjured, if a little tired, and was reunited with its herd.”

Crews returned to their stations by 10.45am.

Mr Smith added: “The 999 call was initially made to police who then passed it through to us. We’d just like to remind members of the public that if they see an animal that is in distress and needs rescuing to please call the fire service immediately.

“We have specialist equipment and are trained to attend these sorts of incidents -- never put yourself at risk trying to attempt a rescue.

“When calling 999, try and be as precise as possible with your location and the best access for the emergency services to reach the incident.”
