FIREFIGHTERS were forced to close a busy city street on Sunday while they tackled a house fire.
Two crews from Ely and a crew from Littleport were called at about 5.20pm to St Mary's street in the heart of the Ely to tackle a blaze on the second floor of a house.
The fire had taken hold in a bedroom and eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were called in to tackle the blaze. Large amounts of smoke was billowing from the property and crews were forced to close the road for the duration of the event.
The crews managed to get the blaze under control by 7pm though there investigations are still under way to try and determine the cause. There was extensive smoke damage to the property but no injuries were reported.
