A TRAILER fell off the back of a Ford Transit van and smashed into a Range Rover on Great Fen Road at Soham.

The vehicle - owned by Shropshires - was being driven by Gary Mills at the time of the accident, and on Thursday he appeared before magistrates.

Mills, 48, of Lynn Road, Littleport, admitted two offences in relation to the accident on August 20. He pleaded guilty to using a Ford Transit that was pulling a trailer not fitted with a device designed to stop the trailer automatically, if it became uncoupled.

He further admitted using the vehicle when it was dangerous, because it was likely that the correct coupling procedure was not adhered to, causing the detachment of the trailer. The trailer's brake cable, being looped around the neck of the ball hitch, had become detached with the trailer, and so could not apply the trailer's brakes.

Mills, who was fined a total of £450 with another £50 in costs and surcharge, told magistrates that his employers had set up new procedures for coupling a trailer.
