St Peter's Church

The Olive Tree

HOLY Communion was the focal point of Sunday morning worship, as the Pastor's address highlighted the role of Jesus as our High Priest. He showed us parallels between the mysterious Old Testament character Melchizedek and our Lord. We also heard a report from one of our young people, currently on a ministry training course away from home, who was visiting for the weekend.

SUNDAY: 10.30am service when the speaker will be Simon Payne. All are welcome.

Methodist Church

SUNDAY morning service at 11am, which opened with a prayer, was led by the Rev Steve Watts. There were three gospel readings from the New Testament. The sermon was based on the fellowship of God and five hymns were sung.

The evening service at 6.30pm was led by the Rev Sheila MacInally. Musicians were Ginny Klein and Donald Monk.

Thursday: Shopper's Lunch from noon till 1pm.

Saturday: Steve Watts - one man show and supper from 6.30pm.

Sunday: Morning service at 11am will be led by the Rev Dick Prior. Church lunch at 12.45pm; church AGM at 2.30pm, followed by short service of communion.

The evening service at 6.30pm will be led by the Rev Steve Watts and the musician will be Donald Monk.

Countess Freechurch

CELEBRATION, praise and worship had the theme of 'the resurrection of Jesus' beginning the Sunday morning service led by Paul Coghlan. The children's talk was based on 'the forgiveness of Jesus' illustrated by Paul and a dog handling puppet; the children then went to their various classes in the hall. Pastor Lowman spoke on the Emmaus Road. This is the beginning of a new series. The study will also be the subject of the house groups when they begin next week. Holy Communion celebration ended the service. Andy Watson assisted by the music group and singers began the evening service at 6.30pm. The Fellowship Hour on the previous Wednesday was led by Jo Sammons.

The prayer meeting on Wednesday evening was focussed on Fellowship Hour, Priest Meadow Outreach, Bowls Club and Alpha Group follow up.

Thursday: the elders and deacons meet for a time of discussion and prayer for the ongoing work throughout the church.

Friday: Rock Solid and 501 Youth Group restart after the Easter break.

Saturday: the Bowls Club meet in the hall for a time of fellowship. Pastor Lowman will bring the message to the church on Sunday morning and in the evening Rob Betts will speak on 'the big journey'.

CHETTISHAM

Parish Church

MORNING Prayer at St Michael and All Angels on Sunday was led by Piers Coutts. The first lesson was read by Linda Aylott and the offertory was presented by Michael Richer.

Next Sunday's Sung Eucharist is at 9.15am.

LITTLEPORT

Evangelical Church

PASTOR Barnds has started a series of messages, which cover the ministry of Jesus on earth between His resurrection and His ascension. This past Sunday, even with the cold weather, we had a very warm fellowship and party as we bid Leandra Koerper farewell as she will be leaving this week for Alaska. The church also observed Holy Communion with Heber Martin and Wesley Rolfe assisting Pastor Barnds. Services: Thursday at 7pm and Sunday at 10.30am.

TreeHouse Club

THIS Saturday, TreeHouse Club will be taking some of the youth to Ely for bowling. This is a special reward for those who have been faithful in attendance and being active in TreeHouse. TreeHouse offers activities from outdoor games on the all-weather sports pitch. Indoor activities include crafts, model building and various table games. TreeHouse is open on Fridays, from 6.30pm till 9pm and is located at the Evangelical Church, Globe Lane. Admission is £1. Tuck shop available.

St George's Church

LAST Sunday the vicar presided and preached at the 8am Holy Communion and the 10am Parish Eucharist, when Jane Harris was the preacher. The First Sunday Praise at 6.30pm was led by John and Rosemary Marshall with a selection of hymns using popular melodies.

Saturday: Puppet workshop at 2pm, for adults and children over 11 years.

Sunday: The vicar will preside and preach at both the 8am Holy Communion and the 10am Parish Eucharist. At 6.30pm, we shall be joining our friends at St John's Methodist Church for evening service at which Carol Swain will preach.

Monday: 5.30pm, the parish of Littleport will be remembered during Evensong at Ely Cathedral .

Tuesday: Pram Service at 1.45pm, for pre-school toddlers and their parents/carers.

Wednesday: Holy Communion at 9.30am.

Saturday: Friendship lunch in the Parish Room at 12.30pm.

LITTLEPORT

St John's Methodist Church

WE welcomed Ken Brown from Soham who led the morning worship on Sunday. Peter Kirby was the pianist. The Rev June Mallabon led the evening service, which included the celebration of Holy Communion. Pat Hodson was the pianist.

Sunday: The Rev Mallabon will lead the morning service at 10.45am. Tony Murfitt will lead a united service at St John's with St George's Parish Church at 6.30pm.

Salvation Army

SUNDAY morning's meeting was led by Sister Maureen Caddy on the topic of 'living a life worthy of our calling' (Ephesians 4:1-6). Brother Geoff Porter led the afternoon meeting, teaching on the meaning of prayer. We are now preparing for the 120th anniversary of the Salvation Army in Littleport, taking place on Sunday, April 20. Meetings will be led at 11am and 3pm by Colonel Ann Hurcum, supported by Ipswich Songsters and band. If anyone has photos or memorabilia relating to the City Road Hall, please let us take copies. For instance, during the war, schools were evacuated here from east London and some classes were held at the hall. Do you have memories to share?

St. George's Church.

OUR Communion Service was led by Cannon Bruce Curry who spoke about the early church. Readers were Betty Kintoff and Fiona Redpath, organist was John Drewry.

Continuing prayers were said for Peter and Rene Cockerton and Margaret Digwell, following their recent car accident.

Sunday: We join our friends at the Baptist Chapel for a United Family Service at 9.45am.

OUR evening service was conducted by Lloyd Wilson who spoke on the theme of hope. Prayers were said for Peter and Rene Cockerton and Margaret Digwell.

Sunday: United Family Service at 9.45am. The preacher will be Pastor Dave Hall.

At 6.30pm, the evening service will be led by Brian Mills.

The Girl's Brigade will meet again at 6pm on Friday.

SOHAM

Heartbeat Health Walk

ON March 31, 36 walkers, plus the three leaders, met at the church for the weekly walk starting from the church at 10am. They stopped off at The Ship for welcome refreshments.

Soham Over 60's Club

MANY club members were away for a few days at Eastbourne so numbers were relatively few at the meeting on March 28. Diane Wheeling and Jean Wells were in charge. Diane welcomed the group. Those attending, despite the miserable weather, were rewarded by an afternoon of bingo. There were insufficient gentlemen to play dominoes, so the men joined in the bingo. Jean Wells organised the refreshments and she was assisted by Prim Audus and Frances Martin. Diane Wheeling organised the raffle and everyone joined in for the singing of the club hymn.

On Friday, Diane Wheeling welcome everyone to the meeting, which included three new members. Peggy Gibbon gave out the announcements. The speaker for the afternoon was Susanah Lindsey who is a physiotherapist from the Falls Clinic at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely. Susanah talked to members about the importance of posture and gentle exercise everyday, which can be done sitting in a chair. Members enjoyed taking part in a short programme of exercises during the afternoon. Members were invited to ask her questions. Ruth Ginn thanked Susanah on behalf of the members. Refreshments were served and Vera Seal organised the raffle. The meeting closed with the singing of the club hymn.

Soham The Fen and Barway Womens Institute

PRESIDENT Sheila Knight welcomed members to the meeting in the Mill View Room on Friday. The business of the evening was gone through and this was followed by the raffle and refreshments. The speaker for the evening was Jo Sturgeon who practices Swedish body massage. Jo spoke on the history of Swedish body massage before inviting the members to have a massage on their hands, knees or feet. Many of the members took up her offer and enjoyed it. Gwen Bridgeman thanked her for coming to the meeting. Members were reminded of the meeting on May 2 when the speaker will be Peter Jackson from Scotsdale Nursery and the exhibition will be a plant pot.

Methodist Church

LAST Saturday we held a very successful Bygones Quiz Night at Berrycroft. Once again this was very ably presented by Reg, Anita, Tony and Marie Brown.

Approximately 100 people took part and our knowledge of bygones was really put to the test. The winning team was Reg's Friends. The Toyntons were the winners of the booby prize.

Everyone then enjoyed a ploughman's supper for which we thank the members of the social and fund-raising committee and helpers. A raffle completed the evening.

Debbie Bullman thanked Reg, Anita, Tony and Marie and presented them all with a gift. Debbie also thanked everyone for their support and Kitty Wallis thanked the committee members for all the hard work they do.

£316 was raised for our church funds.

Last Sunday, services were led by Terry Day in the morning and Richard Dean in the evening.

SUTTON

Friday Games Club

MEMBERS of the Friday Games Club enjoyed lunch at the Blue Bell restaurant in Chatteris last week and returned to Sutton to play a variety of games.

All are welcome to join in at the Brookfields Centre in Sutton on Fridays, from 2pm-4pm. Next week, members will also enjoy a beetle drive.

Conservation Society

THE old play copse on the old recreation ground has been tidied up. The dogwoods have been cut back to help the new colourful stems for winter and the hazels have had some coppicing. There were lots of brambles spreading into the willows and spindle trees at the back of the site, which have now been cleared. We have also planted more bluebells, wild garlic, violets and foxgloves. Hopefully, these will flower this year, so visit the site in April/May to see if they have.

We were fortunate to be awarded a grant to purchase two sets of loppers and a pruning saw for this project from Action Earth.

The plantation wood is looking great at the moment, as there are hundreds of daffodils flowering, and the trees are beginning to bud up.

We had a sale of plants at the Tithe Sale in the church on April 5.

Our next talk will be on April 17 in the pavilion at 8pm. Mark Shelton, waste promotions manager, Donarbon Recycling Centre, will give an illustrated talk about the recycling process, and we will be following this up with a visit to the site in May.

St Andrew's Parish Church

250 Club

THE 250 Club raises much needed funds to restore the church. In March, the £30 prize went to Mrs Robinson of High Street, Sutton.

Choir

We welcome all singers, but have a special need for those who can sing alto and bass.

PCC Beetle Drive

THIS will be held at The Glebe on April 18 from 7.30pm-10pm. Ticket price includes a supper of hot dogs and beef burgers and fruit - bring your own drinks. Vegetarians catered for. There will be prizes and a raffle. Tickets cost £6 for adults, £4 for children or £18 for a family of four.

Feast Committee

THE committee has booked the Daniel Smith Blues Band to play in Sutton School Hall for April 25. Daniel has been nominated British Blues Player of the Year and when his band last visited the area, it played to packed houses.

This is intended to be the first in a series of co-products with [act] in a wide range of entertainment types.

Tickets cost £6 per adult, £5 concessions and should be booked in advance. A bar will be available throughout the evening. Doors will open at 7.30pm for a prompt start at 8pm.

Photographic Club

MEMBERS were welcomed to the April 2008 meeting by Mick Dolphin. After a short business meeting to arrange future outings and displays, Ian Stacey gave a talk on compact cameras. Members were able to see the advantages and disadvantages, and were able to ask advice and help with their own equipment.

The winner of last month's competition was Caroline Dewar.

Next month's meeting will be on May 1 at Sutton Pavilion, 7.30pm. The competition is Fenland Landscape (up to two entries per person).

Microlite School

SUTTON Microlite school officially opened on Saturday when more than 70 microliters from across the UK descended on Sutton Meadows airfield.

The school will be run by 26-year-old Dave Broom, the youngest ever microlite instructor, who has been a full-time instructor since he was just 20. A winner of European and World championship medals, Mr Broom was planning the official launch to be followed by a barbeque and all-night party. WITCHFORD

Baptist Church

LAST Sunday we welcomed Keith Rawlinson from Willingham Baptist Church. He led the service and joined us in Holy Communion. This Sunday, Carole Durose from our own church will lead us in worship at 10.30am.

St Andrew's Church

CAROL Taylor led the family service on Sunday, and the Rev Teresa Dixon gave the address. There is Holy Communion on Tuesdays at 10am; and morning prayer on Wednesdays at 9.30am. The Baby Café will meet on Friday at 9.30am in the hall.

There is a coffee morning in the hall on April 16 at 10am, following the Toddler Praise service at 10am.
