Calling for an end to violence against women and girls around the world, a speaker from Fearless Women visited Ely last week.
The event was organised by James Taylor, a volunteer local organiser for international development charity ActionAid UK.
Ajax Sengwayo, a 21-year-old LGBTI anti-violence activist from Orange Farm, South Africa and Michelle Festus, ActionAid South Africa’s women’s rights coordinator both spoke at the meet.
Ajax spoke about the experience of lesbian and bisexual women facing brutal and sometimes fatal violence in the slums of Johannesburg, and to gain Ely’s support for ActionAid’s campaign to end violence against women.
Statistics show that, globally, one in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime.
Caroline Jones, women’s rights campaigner at ActionAid UK said: “Sadly, violence against women and girls remains a daily reality everywhere in the world.
“Women and girls face the possibility of violence in the home, on the street, at school and at work every day – this cannot continue.”
She added that the work of Ajax and others is great to gain local support.
