A DECISION on ambitious expansion plans for a primary school in Soham is expected within a matter of weeks after an application was formally submitted to the county council.

The Weatheralls Primary School, on Pratt Street, has applied to extend its premises to cater for another 210 pupils by September 2013.

The school, together with Cambridgeshire County Council, carried out months of public consultation and design work before formally submitting the planning application late last month.

The two-storey extension will include a new entrance, six classrooms, a main hall and extra administration rooms, with space currently taken up by temporary classrooms restored to playing fields.

According to the architects, Pick Everard, Years 5 and 6 will be housed in the new extension, which will also have dozens of new cycle bays as well as outdoor classroom space.

On the Weatheralls School website, headteacher Chrissy Barclay said: “Weatheralls is one of two primary schools that serve the town of Soham. The school is currently growing in size to meet the needs of a growing town population. We are very excited by the possibilities and challenges of such growth and are looking forward to the next chapter of the school’s life.”
