THE manager of The Old Palace, Ely, retired this week after two decades of service at the Sue Ryder care home.

Mavis Garner, of Broadway, Witchford, had a visit from Jim Paice on Friday, who paid tribute to Mrs Garner's hard work and dedication to the Old Palace.

"I've come here today to say goodbye to Mavis," he said.

"She's been absolutely fantastic for Sue Ryder here."

Mrs Garner began her career as a nurse in Yorkshire, but moved to the district after she saw a talk by Lady Ryder.

"I really liked what she had to say," Mrs Garner said, "and I thought I'd like to be part of what she was setting up in Ely."

She started at the 15-bed Old Palace as a nurse, but moved up to become matron and later, general manager.

"I've enjoyed every day," she said.

"I don't think I've ever had a day I haven't enjoyed."

She said that the most significant change over the last 20 years has been the overall approach to healthcare.

"It has really progressed," she said, "It allows people to lead full lives with good care and social participation."

Mrs Garner held a retirement party on Tuesday, but she will be staying on at The Old Palace on a part-time basis.

Mr Paice said: "Mavis has led the Sue Ryder home in Ely in an exceptional way and I am delighted that she will be continuing her connection as a voluntary worker."
