The team behind the conversion of Tower Mill in Little Downham is heading to London after being short listed for a national award.
A group of specialists including architects and East Cambs District Council won the regional award. Now they will see if they win the title of best in the country in the category of best change of use of an existing building or conversion.
The Grade II listed Tower Mill was in disrepair with no sails, windows or cap, but has been sympathetically developed into a stylish and modern eco-friendly home.
Henry Martin said “Every space is delightful or has elements to delight. It is like living in a holiday home, but every day”.
Jason Johnson, senior building control surveyor at East Cambridgeshire District Council said: “We are really excited that Tower Mill came top, the work the team has done is of an excellent standard and really does deserve recognition at the national awards”.
Judith Brear from Freeman Brear Architects said: “We are thrilled to have got this far and have high hopes for the national awards.
“Everyone worked really hard on this project and to see all the efforts recognised like this has been fantastic”.
Freeman Brear Architects will join Henry Martin, Offord, Camp LLP and local authority building control team, East Cambridgeshire District Council at the ceremony.
The home includes details like a glazed viewing area and mezzanine which provide uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and allows night-time observation of the big Fenland skies.
As well as its architecturally-stunning exterior, it has been designed with energy efficiency at its core with a biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting system, and a mechanical ventilation system keeps the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer and re-uses up to 95 per cent of the heat that would have otherwise have been lost.
The awards event is the Local Authority Building Control LABC national awards to be held in London.
