Cambridgeshire police and firefighters are promoting messages to warn young people to stay away from rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the recent spate of hot weather.
Inspector Marcia Pringle met with senior officers from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue at Ely fire station on Wednesday, and a subject of concern was the risks posed to young people who choose to swim in open water.
Additionally concerns were raised about the lighting of fires and barbeques near such sites - which in hot and dry weather can easily become difficult to control.
Inspector Pringle said: “In the immediate area of Ely, the Roswell Pits are an obvious point of concern - there are signs that young people have been using this area as a meeting point, have been attracted to the water, and fires have been lit there.
“We know that these kind of situations can lead to tragic conclusions. We remember the recent and tragic death of Rony John who died in the River Ouse at Hartford on 24th July 2014 - the day after his school broke for the summer holiday.
“We desperately want to avoid anything of this nature happening this summer.”
