AN Ely woman has been left distraught after her two pet cats were killed in a suspected arson attack on Thursday.

Gabriel Cannavaro told the Ely Standard that she was 'too upset for words' after finding that her two cats Buster and Mitzy had died in what police and fire crews suspect was an arson attack at her house in Broad Street.

She said: "I am so angry and upset at what happened. I have no enemies that I know of so I can't understand why anyone would have done this.

"I kept a lot of stuff in the shed that I don't need inside the house and that sort of thing can be replaced but I wont be able to replace two lives and that is so upsetting.

"I would like something like this to happen to the people who did it so that they can know what it feels like, and I know that sounds terrible but I'm just so angry at the moment."

Ms Cannavaro was out dining with friends when she received a call at around 10.30pm from one of the party who had gone to her home in Broad Street, telling her that her shed had been burnt to the ground.

She raced home to find that the flames had destroyed the shed and quickly realised that the cats were also caught up in the blaze. Around 2500 worth of damage was caused in the blaze.

Buster, a tom cat, had been with Gabriel for around two years while Mitzy, a moggy, had been with her for 10.

Inspector Sean MacLoughlin of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "This is a mindless act of vandalism which has resulted in the tragic loss of two pets.

"This incident has been extremely distressing for those involved and it is vital we trace those responsible. I would urge anyone with information about this fire to contact us."

Anyone with information should contact PC Thompson on 0345 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
