In 2006, the ETA was able to convince East Cambs District Council that the public were against the proposed introduction of parking charges.
After a hard battle, we were able to secure funding for the purchase of land to create a commuter car park, which should result in freeing up city centre car parks.
We have formed a liaison with our local council to improve the city centre, meetings have been held with the police, the litter team and Ely Perspective to deal with issues and problems. It is anticipated these will be on-going relationships.
The ETA was approached by the Ely Lighting Committee to see if funds could be raised to support the Christmas lights. The ETA organised a lottery, which raised £970. This was given to the Lighting Committee for use in 2007. Every independent shop, and some of the chains donated generously towards the hamper.
Objectives for 2007
The ETA will remain closely involved with helping to solve the traffic problems in Ely, especially when the commuter car park is built, ensuring there is optimum use of all car parks.
The ETA will continue to work with various organisations to improve the city centre for shopkeepers and the public, particularly city centre security. A 'problem diary' is being kept. We have been working with Ely Perspective to create a shoppers' guide and this will be completed shortly.
Ely Lighting Committee has approached us to raise funds to maintain the Christmas lights on an on-going basis, which we have agreed to support.
Please feel free to join any meeting if you have any issues or comments to share.
Meetings take place every third Monday of the month at The Lamb Hotel at 6pm.
