A ten-year-old Ely schoolgirl is pulling on her running shoes to raise money for charity on Sunday.
Lauren Booth, known as Lolly, has organised to run a half-marathon (13 miles) with her proud mum Anne Booth and family friend Emma Greaves, to raise money for Unicef.
Anne, of Queen Adelaide, explained her daughter came up with the idea after her school - King’s Ely - adopted Unicef as their charity last year.
“It really struck a chord with her and she read up more on the charity and decided she wanted to do something to help poor children,” said Anne.
“She came up with the idea of doing a half-marathon, but she was not able to take part in any organised races because of her age. I tried to encourage her to do other things like a cake stall, but she was very determined and said that a cake stall wouldn’t raise enough money.
“She has already raised over £1,100 on her justgiving page. She has organised the run and is determined to raise as much money as she can. So we will be running from somewhere near Wicken to Ely Cathedral on Sunday (15).
“Her younger sister Isabel isn’t taking part in the run, but she is doing her bit by baking cakes and handing them out for a donation to the charity,” said Anne.
Lolly, who takes part in cross country runs at school and is also involved in athletics, has been in training for the run.
“She is taking it very seriously and we have been out for training runs, so she is ready to do the half-marathon at the weekend,” said Anne, who added: “I’m really proud of what she has achieved so far, she is a really sweet, kind-hearted girl. She never asks for anything, I even offered to buy her a new pair trainers for the run, but she said her old ones were good enough.”
