Ely's Greg is radio ga-ga as he joins other Cambridgeshire scouts to broadcast Hereward show

Scouts from Cambridgeshire were on the same wavelength when they got together to broadcast their own radio show on Hereward Radio.
For Ely’s Greg Pollard, James Traynor, Jamie Ward, Sophie Graham, and Simon Burgess, this was not only a first for them broadcasting their own show, but for some of them it was the first time they had spoken into a microphone.
A few weeks beforehand they had been given an introduction at the radio station and showed how to use the equipment by Hereward’s Matthew Kisby.
To be ready for their leap into the presenter’s chair the group had to select music, decide which matters they would like to discuss on air and come up with some jokes.
They then spent over forty-five minutes discussing which was the best Explorer Unit (boys and girls aged 14 to 18) in the County, international camps they had been on and their plans for camping in 2016.
They also took the opportunity to interview adult volunteer David Robinson and Nigel Taylor from the Scout Association who spoke about the continued success of Scouting with ten successive years of growth.
At the end of the broadcast Matthew said, “I thought it was a very good effort from them bearing in mind most of them had never been in front of a microphone before.”
Sophie said, “I was a bit nervous at the start but once I’d answered a few questions I became quite confident and having the microphone in front of me didn’t faze me”. She added, “Who would have thought that when I joined Scouts I would have been speaking on the radio.”
The next show is scheduled for Thursday January 12 at 7.00pm.
The aim of Hereward Radio is to build the station on the three pillars of education for all the area’s educationally disadvantaged groups, truly engage with the community by going out and supporting local events, and provide a facility for other charities, community groups and individuals to use to promote their own aims and goals, all while entertaining you in a way unique to Hereward Radio.
