Isabel Frias de la Uz, who was born in Madrid but has lived in Ely for the last eight years, travelled to North Yorkshire to compete against 49 other artists.

She now awaits the wildcard winners of the next five heats and will compete against them for one semi-final slot in the competition.

The competition’s judges, Kathleen Soriano, Tai Shan Schierenberg and Kate Bryan, described Isabel’s painting of the iconic Knaresborough railway bridge over the River Nidd as an excellent piece of work.

Kate Bryan announced Isabel as the wildcard winner and, speaking for the judges, said the painting was beautiful.

Isabel said after winning: “It has been a wonderful day. I’m very glad to have won.”
