Ely Magistrates’ Court to close

ELY Magistrates’ Court is set to close because it is judged to be “underused and inadequate”.

The Ministry of Justice has included the Ely courthouse in wide-ranging planned cutbacks to save money and transform the criminal justice system.

It will mean fewer criminals will end up in court as Ministers look to resolve disputes using more on-the-spot fines as well as electronic and online technology.

And Local Justice Areas could also be merged, meaning cases could be heard miles away from where the incident occurred.

Courts Minister Jonathan Djanogly said it was “vital to eliminate waste and reduce costs” while public finances remain under pressure.
