A junction in Ely is the joint most dangerous spot for cyclists outside of Cambridge in the whole of the county.

A report to Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Community Infrastructure Committee revealed that between 2011-2013, there was one serious and five slight injuries at the Back Hill junction on Broad Street and the vicinity.

The 10 most dangerous roads, roundabouts and junctions are in Cambridge. Half the overall casualties are from the city. The only cyclist death was reported on Histon Road in Cambridge.

There was one serious and five slight injuries to cyclists at Freedom Bridge roundabout in Wisbech. One serious and two slight injuries were reported at the Inhams Road roundabout junction in Whittlesey.

In 2014, there was a 40 per cent increase in cyclist casualties (from 48 to 67). However, pedestrian casualties fell by nine per cent (from 33 to 20) and car casualties fell by six per cent (from 133 to 125).

Between 2004 and 2014, injuries to cyclists increased by 31 per cent, while injuries to motorcyclists, pedestrians and car occupants decreased.

To combat this, the council is running schemes like Bike It, which raises awareness of bike safety in schools.
