THE search is on for the most green-fingered residents in Ely who have created fabulous floral displays around the city this summer.
Judges will be out and about on August 6 taking a look at hanging baskets, colourful planters, front gardens, community gardens, shop windows and pubs to find the winners in a host of categories.
Ely in Bloom is run by the City of Ely Council and this year’s floral theme is flame colours - so red to orange and gold flowers are bound to catch the judges’ eye.
In the competition to find the best front garden in the city, judges will look for the best use of space. The pub category will be judged on visual impact, design and freshness of flowers.
Shop window displays should adopt the theme of flame colours and judges want to see original interpretation of the theme, within the availability of goods sold in the shop.
In the best volunteers’ group flower bed competition, planting can display the group’s colours, uniform or flag. The best commercial floral display will be judged on visual impact.
One of the most keenly fought categories is the best sheltered housing community garden. The council says the garden should be based on flame colours and show how community spirit has led to everyone working together.
A presentation evening will be arranged at a later date.
