The Ely Hero Awards 2018 saw more than a 40 per cent increase in nominations compared to last year, organisers have revealed.
Metro Rod Cambridge thanked local businesses, finalists and the winners for their hardwork surrounding the event which took place last Monday (June 25) at The Maltings.
The most sought after gong of the evening - The Ely Hero Award - went to 44-year-old Ruth Marley, from Mepal, who runs the Re-Imagination recycling unit at Witchford.
Naomi Sherwood, business development manager at Metro Rod, said: “With a wonderfully inspiring, emotional Ely Hero Awards 2018 at a close, organisers Metro Rod Cambridge with fantastic organisational assistance from Infiniti Graphics and Sadie Finch would like to thank the community for the incredible support of the event during the search for the Heroes of Ely and the District.
“There was an amazing 42 per cent increase this year in nominations - the community really got behind this event with the nominations in the 10 different categories.
“Congratulations to the finalists and winners, we are sure that they will continue their excellent work for our community supporting others. We all make a difference.
“The whole event couldn’t happen without the generous support of the local business sponsors and media partner The Ely Standard.
“It was an honour and pleasure to meet all those who supported the finalists at the ceremony, an unforgettable evening.”
Other highlights of the night saw The Child of Achievement award saw all three inspirational children commended alongside a poignant standing ovation.
Kiera Haynes, Alfie McCreadie and Jay Davison received chocolate alongside their trophies as well as a big hug from their families afterwards.
Thanks were also given to Elyi Magazine, ThorLabs, Life Fitness, Xpert Resourcing, Kings School Ely, Crown Garage Honda, Ely Gin Company, Grovemere Property, Lovewell Blake, Milton Executive Cars, Platinum Properties, Masters Logistical, The Poets House, Shooting Image Ltd, We are Blue Shed, Gin House Flowers, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and businesses who donated raffle prizes for nominated charity Steel Bones.
