Unlike previous events, there is one award category at this year’s Ely Hero Awards that is perhaps more poignant than others.

Judges have summed up this category for “an individual whose time, effort, support and aspirations have made a notable contribution within their community for the benefit of those who live there.”

It is an honour renamed the Mike Rouse Community Champion Award, in recognition of the former city councillor, mayor of Ely and supporter of the awards, who died in May.

Naomi Sherwood, who helps organise the Ely Hero Awards, said: “Mike was an avid supporter of the Ely Hero Awards.

“He was devoted to his family and his home city of Ely and he supported the community in many more ways than any of us will ever realise.”

It is one of 10 categories at this year’s awards, which will be held at The Maltings on September 23.
