Nominations for the Ely Hero Awards are now closed and the judges are getting set to shortlist inspirational individuals from across the city.

Organisers say that they have received an “incredible” amount of entries, ahead of the ceremony which will take place on June 25 at The Maltings.

Nominations have been coming in thick and fast in 10 categories, ranging from Colleague of the Year to Caring Companion.

The judges will now begin to carefully review all of the nominations and judge them against the category descriptions in order to produce a shortlist before contacting all the nominees.

Organised by Metro Rod Cambridge - in partnership with The Ely Standard - it is the second year running for the event.

Naomi Sherwood, business development manager, said: “We have excitedly received the last of the nominations for this years Ely Hero Awards and what a incredible set of nominations they are.

“Once again we are bowled over with the amount of nominations received and the amazing stories behind them - some of which really do tug on the heartstrings, that’s as much as I can say for now.

“The judges now have the unenviable task of processing the submissions in order to shortlist the finalists, they will have a challenge on their hands but one I know they will very much enjoy as they reveal the amazing heroes of Ely and the surrounding villages.

“It is very exciting times ahead and a second award ceremony to shed the light on some very special people.”

Judges will include councillor and ex-mayor, Lis Every, who added: “I was delighted to be asked to be a judge again. I am sure that it will be even bigger and better than last year.

“I judged the young persons category which was really, really hard and I met so many who had overcome such difficulties to be where they are.

“Every single one of them is a winner – there are no losers in this. I suspect this year there will be more applications making it even more difficult. If they have been nominated then they are a real star.”
