Members of the Ely Hereward Rotary Club, along with partners and Ely Inner Wheel members, enjoyed an evening tour of the distribution depot of Turners (Soham) Ltd, just outside Newmarket.
The company recently won the ‘Tanker of the Year’ award, and is now the largest operator of chilled food haulage and storage in the UK.
Frank Connolly, of Ely Hereward Rotary Club, said: “The visitors received an introductory talk followed by a two hour guided visit around the company’s produce, sorting, and packing departments, its vehicle movement control office - where 1,800 refrigerated and tanker units are directed - and finally to the storage area where a constant temperature of -25 degrees is maintained.
“Asked about the effect of Brexit, it was the shortage of skilled HGV drivers which was of most concern to them – Turners already employ over 3000 workers, and the company is still expanding.”
