The cadets got “up close and personal” with some of the RAF’s most treasured historical aircraft such as The Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster while being the guests of the BBMF maintenance flight for the day.

The squadron was rewarded with the rare treat as they recently donated a Chipmunk aircraft engine to the BBMF, which the Squadron had used for decades as a visual aid to train young cadets.

Also accompanying the cadets was the Chair of the Ely Branch of the Royal Air Force Association charity, Mrs Dot Eames who achieved a lifetime ambition of sitting in the cockpit of a Spitfire.

For two of the squadron’s youngest cadets getting to look inside The Lancaster bomber was even more poignant, as cadets Polly Nickless and James Munday had only recently spent the day with the surviving crews of the RAF’s pathfinder Lancaster Squadron at RAF Wyton.

The visit took place on August 29.
