A railway campaigning group have told a driver they “should have gone to Specsavers” after they struck Britain’s most bashed bridge in Ely.
The driver of a Clearabee rubbish clearance van hit the bridge on Tuesday (September 4) – ripping the roof from the truck.
An eye-witness said they “heard a loud crash” and that Greater Anglia staff at Ely rail station rushed to the scene to asses the damage.
A spokesman for Railfuture East Anglia, a group campaigning “for a bigger and better railway in Britain”, said: “Today at Ely station we heard a loud crash.
“Yet another bridge bash at the most bashed railway bridge in Britain. Greater Anglia staff rushed down to see damage to bridge. Fortunately nothing severe and trains ran.
“Remember: lorries can’t limbo. The Clearabee vehicle came off worse in fight with bridge, losing its roof.
“What part of “WARNING VERY LOW BRIDGE” did he not understand? Or maybe he should have gone to Specsavers.”
