HUNDREDS of fruit lovers descended on Palace Green in Ely on Saturday to celebrate the city's Apple Day.

Apples of all sizes, colours, varieties and uses were on display and visitors enjoyed competitions, games, music, stalls and refreshments all with an apple theme.

The popular breed identifier allowed people to find out what variety of apple grows in their gardens. There was a competition to produce the longest apple peel and an apple and spoon race which was enjoyed by parents and children alike. A variety of stalls contained everything from rural crafts such as bee keeping to live folk music and apple related wares for sale.

Apple Day is organised and run by East Cambridgeshire District Council and Watergull Orchards. Tracey Harding, tourism team leader at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "Apple Day in Ely is always a brilliant day for the whole family. There was so much going on that some people spent the whole day wandering around the different stalls and joining in the fun.
